The 8 Best Movie Posters of ‘08

The 8 Best Movie Posters of ‘08
by Fidel Antonio M. Medel

8. Choke, dir. Clark Gregg
I prefer photography to drawings but this looks pretty interesting. Unlike other ‘art’ movie posters, this is clutter-free (read: not too many elements) and goes straight to the message it wants to convey.

7. Wanted, dir. Timur Bekmambetov
Jolie is spelled as L-O-V-E. Add bullet trajectory, a staple in this action-packed film, and you’ll get a poster almost as electrifying as this explosive blockbuster.

6. Man on Wire, dir. James Marsh
Simple, yet it inspires an inevitable second look. Yes, that’s the twin towers and a man crossing on a wire.

5. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, dir. Mark Herman
Two kids separated by a barbed wire fence. Isn’t that enough to tug your heart? The evocative way this shot was taken definitely didn’t hurt the final product.

4. The Dark Knight, dir. Christopher Nolan
Unlike the other posters of this movie that run on adrenaline, this can be considered as a bit tamed. What it lacks in energy, it makes up for in sheer cerebral push.

3. Zack and Miri Make a Porno, dir. Kevin Smith
All you need to see to understand why I like this poster are those two heads right at the bottom. Now, think green. Now you know why this particular poster was banned in the United States.

2. W., dir. Oliver Stone
Spontaneous. Personal. Intimate. Sardonic. And just plain clever.

1. Funny Games, dir. Michael Haneke
Naomi Watts’ headshot screams of utter torture and that’s exactly what’s in store in this US remake to feed the viewers’ sadistic fantasies.

A little more than a year after this poster was conceived, other horror flicks have already imitated it. They say, imitation is a form of flattery. And this movie poster wouldn’t be imitated if it weren’t any good. Now, look at these rip-offs:

I love the poster of Funny Games too! After watching the film, I felt a bit disturbed. I think the poster was able to capture the movie's ironic wit.

COunt me in. I like the film too, though I wouldn't know how to make of it if I saw Haneke's original French (or was it Dutch?) version.

The US version is actually a shot-by-shot remake of the original French version. So it's basically the same story, the same pacing, the same treatment, even the same director, but with different actors. But I'm putting all my money on the remake, Naomi Watts is there, it couldn't be bad, that's for sure.
